Before I moved to Dubai, I thought of brunch as a late breakfast consisting of coffee, toast and eggs.
In Dubai, however, brunch happens at lunch time and usually goes till dinner time. It generally includes a huge variety of the most exquisite food from all over the world and unlimited alcohol. This sounds like quite a lot of eating and drinking… Well they do say that in your first seven months in Dubai you put on seven pounds!
I am a huge believer of having fun in life and staying fit at the same time. If you can’t avoid a Friday brunch or any buffet for that matter, at least try and be ready for it 🙂
- Hit the gym in the morning
Do some sort of weight training / HIIT to boost your metabolism for the whole day ahead.
- Have a strategy
Let’s face it, you can’t eat it all. You don’t want to eat it all. Even if you try a tiny piece of everything that is available, you will most likely feel quite sick. I always try to choose some sort of theme, be it a certain cuisine, fish / meat, raw / cooked etc., and stick to it.
- Have a walk around first
Decide what you simply can’t resist and what can probably wait till the next time.
- Start with a plate of greens / veggies
This will fill you up a bit before you dive into all the fatty delicacies. Try to avoid pre-cooked salads, since they generally come with heavy dressings.
- Go for a non-alcoholic option
Order a glass of wine if you have to. For most people it is extremely difficult not to overdo it when drinks are unlimited and the waiter is always around ready to top up their glasses.
When you drink too much you will most likely overeat too and feel miserable as a result of both.
- Choose a table far from the buffet
And wear heels if you are a woman 🙂 Anything that will slow you down a bit is great!
- Wear tight-fitting clothes
I know you won’t be super comfortable, but this will save you from binging and will be worth it in the end.
- Pace yourself
Eat and drink slowly and, please, have breaks. Such a simple tip, but a lot of regrets at brunches happen because of not following this tip.
- Drink plenty of water
Alcohol, dry air-conditioning and the heat of the day aren’t a great combination. Staying hydrated should always be high priority and at brunch, especially.
- Enjoy yourself
Having some rules at a Friday brunch isn’t meant to take away from your experience but rather make it more enjoyable. And make sure you work out and eat properly the next day 🙂
